New Orthodontic Technology and the ADX 2018

The last weekend of  March 2018 saw a key event on the annual dental and orthodontic calendar, ‘ADX 2018’ – The Australian Dental Expo. For Brace5’s Dr John Mamutil, an unashamed lover of the latest technology in all walks of life (but especially in his field of expertise), the event always presents a great opportunity to take the pulse of the industry and see what fellow leaders are doing. But while the Expo was all about ‘new’ technology, Dr Mamutil couldn’t avoid the realisation that much of what he was seeing was actually nothing that he and his team at Brace5 haven’t already been doing for years.

One of the big talking points was 3D dental scanners – and quite rightly too, because they are an excellent innovation that does away with the unpleasant process of  taking putty molds of patients’ mouths. But the fact is, Brace5 has been using this technology since 2011! In fact, Brace5 was the first practice in Australia to acquire the original iTero 3D scanner for use with Invisalign patients. The latest 3rd generation upgrade now graces our Hills District practice.

Another hot topic was 3D printers, which have been making waves in a huge number of industries in recent times. Again, we are already onto that, and in fact Dr Mamutil now advises other orthodontists on what systems to get and how to use them efficiently.

The ‘icing’ on the cake was the best lecture of the weekend, an orthodontist from the US showing how he treats children under the age of 10 (in the mixed dentition stage) with Invisalign. It was great to see this, as it verifies what we have been doing over the past 4 years at Brace5. Absorbing every detail of this presentation, it was heartening to see the many parallels with lectures that Dr Mamutil is delivering in Sydney on his own Invisalign treatments for Phase 1 orthodontics (treating kids under the age of 10 with aligners.)

So, although the big features at this year’s Expo didn’t hold much new for early adopters of orthodontic technology like the Brace5 team, it did serve to reinforce that we’re leading the field in the right direction and are years ahead of much of our competition. And this is hugely reassuring to both our current and future patients.
